Macomb Chamber Member Spotlight Interview – Partners in Architecture
Michael A. Malone, AIA
Principal
PARTNERS in Architecture, PLC
“We started with a clear goal of doing great work for the public sector—and our clients have allowed us to grow while staying true to that mission,” said Malone, principal and co-founder of Partners in Architecture. “We don’t have a signature style because we’re not designing for ourselves. Each project reflects the unique needs of the people who use those spaces.”
A full-service architectural design and planning firm, Partners in Architecture works alongside clients through every phase of a project—from initial facility assessments and conceptual design to construction and occupancy. The firm specializes in K-12 educational facilities and municipal projects across Michigan, including work with cities, counties and townships. Through their work with the State of Michigan, they have also expanded into public safety design, including police stations, fire departments and emergency operations centers.
One standout project, especially close to home, is their own office, the historic 1909 Mount Clemens fire station. The team restored the 8,300-square-foot building and has proudly called it home since 2011.
“We wanted to be in a downtown, to really be part of the community,” Malone said. “Mount Clemens offered opportunity and alignment with our goals, and we’ve had a great relationship with Macomb County since day one.”
As the firm looks ahead, it remains focused on growth, innovation and service delivery. The firm has adopted new technology and strengthened ties with architecture programs at local universities to help engage future professionals.
A Macomb County Chamber member for 15 years, Partners in Architecture also regularly participates in events that support their clients and community.
“We appreciate the Chamber as a resource and connector,” Malone said. “It’s a network of people who care about the community and want to see each other succeed.”
When asked what advice he’d give to other small businesses hoping to thrive for two decades or more, Malone doesn’t hesitate: “Perseverance is key. Don’t give up, and don’t take no for an answer. Keep thinking about how to approach opportunities in a new way—and always think from the client’s perspective. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution.”
As Partners in Architecture celebrates 20 years of success, its focus remains the same: delivering projects with purpose, integrity and a deep commitment to the communities it serves.
