Macomb Economic Forecast Highlights Opportunities for Growth and Innovation

Business and community leaders gathered March 2 at Macomb Community College for the 2026 Macomb Economic Forecast, hosted by the Macomb County Chamber in partnership with the Chamber Alliance of Macomb County and presenting sponsor Wayne State University.

The event featured a panel of regional experts discussing the economic trends shaping Macomb County and the opportunities ahead. Panelists included:

  • Tom Alongi, partner, UHY
  • Maureen Donohue Krauss, president & CEO, Detroit Regional Partnership
  • Ben Marchionna, chief innovation ecosystem officer, State of Michigan
  • Vicky Rowinski, CEcD, director, Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development
  • Ned Staebler, vice president for economic development at Wayne State University and president and CEO of TechTown (moderator)

Panelists acknowledged that economic volatility is likely to continue in 2026 due to factors such as global conflicts, inflation and shifting trade policies. At the same time, they emphasized that Macomb County remains well-positioned for growth, thanks to its strong manufacturing base, deep engineering talent and strategic role in the defense and automotive industries.

Rowinski noted that the county’s economic development strategy is focused on building on those strengths while expanding into emerging industries such as aerospace, defense, automation and robotics.

Speakers agreed that continued diversification and investment in innovation will be critical to the county’s long-term success. Just as important, they said, is attracting and retaining the next generation of talent and ensuring Macomb County remains a place where businesses can grow and people want to live and work.
