Lake St. Clair Appreciation Day Ignites Opportunities

The Macomb County Chamber’s fourth annual Lake St. Clair Day brought area leaders from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties to collaborate ideas on economic development, educational programs, tourism and preservation.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel stated, “This Lake is the busiest freshwater lake in the country and of any of the Great Lakes. How do we promote this asset? It is cooperation with officials that truly have the interest to drive our economy forward. We need to identify our assets to the region”.

Dr. Jim Jacobs, President, Macomb Community College discussed the issues that need attention which include: Public Access, Clear Policy on Water Quality, International Roles with Security and Regulations, and Promote Tourism. Dr. Jacobs announced that Macomb Community College is starting a new 4 year degree program on Water Quality with Michigan State, Wayne State and Oakland Universities.

Over 80 local area leaders joined the flotilla to the Detroit Port Authority. The guests were welcomed by Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and John Jamian President and CEO of the Detroit Port Authority. Mr. Jamian led the efforts to receive federal funding for the construction of the new Port Authority. Future Plans will include a cruise line to tour the great lakes and a ferry service between Detroit and Windsor.
